Haymarket and Chinatown Economic and Land Use Study & Strategy

BellRinger in partnership with Atlas Economics, was commissioned by the City of Sydney to analyse the evolving dynamics of the Chinatown/Haymarket area. This district is currently experiencing significant transformations and developments. Particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the precinct, heavily reliant on international students, migrants, tourists, and city workers, has seen a noticeable decline in foot traffic, leading to increased business closures and rising vacancy rates. The study focused on understanding who the customers are and their spending capabilities and assessing the viability of retail and non-retail activities in the area.

The objective was to identify opportunities for Chinatown to reinvent itself amidst the structural changes over the past 5-10 years, including competition from emerging, attractive precincts. This strategic insight aims to guide the revitalization of Chinatown, ensuring its adaptation and continued relevance in a rapidly evolving urban landscape.
